From all over the country people had been calling and e-mailing. Friends, relatives, colleagues, fellow children’s book writers, old neighbors, and kindergarten classmates. They had been watching the news of the flood in Iowa and were worried about us. We were worried too. Our house was safe, far from the flood waters, but what about our friends, our neighbors, our community? What if we were to lose water and power?

Several years ago some creative Italian spinners developed a new technology of spinning and mixing pre-dyed fibers in an engineered color striping program that allows knitters to create interesting self-striping fabrics with minimal knitting skills. In Booklet #276 Geode™ & Jasper™ we explore the possibilities of piecing, biasing and double stranding our self striping yarns to create horizontal, diagonal and vertical stripe relationships in sweaters and accessories.

Each month, we feature an organization that is knitting and crocheting for a good cause. This month’s organization is the Seamen’s Church Institute, founded in 1834, and its “Christmas at Sea” program.

Over 17,000 gifts are knitted and crocheted by over 4,000 volunteers across the United States and distributed to seamen and mariners who are at sea during the holiday season.
