Morning…

Philippians 3:8
I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.

Spiritual knowledge of Christ will be a personal knowledge. I cannot know Jesus through another person’s acquaintance with Him. No, I must know Him myself; I must know Him on my own account. It will be an intelligent knowledge-I must know Him, not as the visionary dreams of Him, but as the Word reveals Him. I must know His natures, divine and human. I must know His offices-His attributes-His works-His shame-His glory. I must meditate upon Him until I “comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.” It will be an affectionate knowledge of Him; indeed, if I know Him at all, I must love Him. An ounce of heart knowledge is worth a ton of head learning. Our knowledge of Him will be a satisfying knowledge. When I know my Saviour, my mind will be full to the brim-I shall feel that I have that which my spirit panted after. “This is that bread whereof if a man eat he shall never hunger.” At the same time it will be an exciting knowledge; the more I know of my Beloved, the more I shall want to know. The higher I climb the loftier will be the summits which invite my eager footsteps. I shall want the more as I get the more. Like the miser’s treasure, my gold will make me covet more. To conclude; this knowledge of Christ Jesus will be a most happy one; in fact, so elevating, that sometimes it will completely bear me up above all trials, and doubts, and sorrows; and it will, while I enjoy it, make me something more than “Man that is born of woman, who is of few days, and full of trouble”; for it will fling about me the immortality of the everliving Saviour, and gird me with the golden girdle of His eternal joy. Come, my soul, sit at Jesus’s feet and learn of Him all this day.

A Real Enemy
1 Peter 5:8-10

Let’s play a little game. Imagine that you’re a soldier during wartime. You’ve made it through basic training, mastered the weapons of war, memorized all the relevant warfare strategies, and are heading into battle.

You’ve seen the war in the news headlines for months. Friends of yours have already been deployed. And now that you’re on the front lines, you witness explosions and desolation all around you. Without a doubt, you know that there is an enemy out to destroy you.

Now, imagine a fellow soldier coming to you and saying, “I really don’t believe there’s an enemy out there. I think it’s a myth, or maybe just a metaphor for evil. It isn’t real.”

How ridiculous! There, in the middle of battle, with fallen comrades and used ammunition littering the battlefield, how on earth could an intelligent person fail to acknowledge the presence of the enemy? It is unthinkable.

And yet, this exact situation is taking place in churches all around the world. Despite the evidence of war and regardless of the overtly personal and custom-fit nature of the attacks, an astounding number of Christians simply do not believe in the existence of Satan. This is a tragic mistake.

My friend, there is a very real, personal Enemy stalking you right now, waiting for the opportunity to destroy you completely. If you want to grow and experience maturity in the Christian life, then you must take this battle seriously.

Are you prepared today? Put on your spiritual armor and follow the Lord into battle.

BELIEVING TRUTH IS A CHOICE Hebrews 11:6
Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him

Faith is the biblical response to the truth, and believing truth is a choice. Faith is something you decide to do , not something you feel like doing . Believing the truth doesn’t make it true; it’s true, so we believe it. The New Age Movement and the “name it and claim it” adherents are distorting the truth by saying that we create reality through what we believe. We can’t create reality; we can only respond to reality.

Faith must have an object. It’s not the idea that you merely “believe” that counts; it’s what or who you believe in that counts. Everybody believes in something, and everybody walks by faith according to what he or she believes. But if what you believe isn’t true, then how you live won’t be right. Thus, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

Your faith is only as great as your knowledge of the object of your faith. If you have little knowledge of God and His Word, you will have little faith. That’s why faith can’t be pumped up. Any attempt to live by faith beyond what you absolutely know to be true is presumption. If you only believe what you feel, you will be led through life by one emotional impulse after another. The path of truth begins with the truth of God’s Word. Believe the truth and walk by faith according what you believe, and then your feelings will line up with what you think and how you behave.

We can’t decide for ourselves what we would like to believe and then believe it, expecting God to respond to our faith. God is under no obligation to man. There is no way we can cleverly word a prayer in such a way that God must answer it. He is under obligation only to Himself. He will always stay true to Himself and keep His Word and His covenants with mankind. It is not our place to determine what is true or try to persuade God to capitulate to our will. He is the truth. We are to ask according to His will and desire His will above all else.

Prayer:

Lord, I believe in You and Your Word. Help my faith grow as I enlarge my knowledge of You as my faith-object.

October 14Read Mark 4 — 5

Highlights In Today’s Reading:

Jesus tells four parables about: God’s Word (4:1-20), our witness (4:21-25), our spiritual growth (4:26-29), and the Kingdom of God (4:30-34). These are followed by four miracles demonstrating that He has authority over the material universe (4:35-41), over demonic spirits (5:1-20), over our bodies (5:25-29), and life or death itself (5:35-42).

Aman with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him. . . . when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped Him (5: 2-3,6). He then cried out because of his spiritual bondage, craving to be delivered.

While this wretched man worshipped Jesus, he suddenly cried out: Torment me not (5:7).Then Jesus said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit (5:8). A strange paradox exists in the heart of a sin-filled soul that has met the Master. And we do not pretend to explain the awesome emotional experience of Peter, when first recognizing his own sinfulness and Jesus’ Deity, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord (Luke 5:8).

This man possessed with demons is an example of the limited power of Satan over the unsaved. He said that his name was Legion (a Roman legion consisted of 6,000 soldiers), illustrating the overwhelming number of Satan’s demons that can motivate and manipulate a lost sinner. But, how we praise the Lord that no one is too great a sinner to be saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. Oh, helpless sinner, how thankful you can be that God in His mercy will transform you to enjoy life more than you could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Regardless of how great a sinner you have been, do not fear to come near your Lord and Savior, and know that he that . . . confesseth and forsaketh them (his sins) shall have mercy (set free, shall be saved) (Proverbs 28:13).

The powerful Saul of Tarsus, who had a legal permit to arrest Christians and have them put to death, also confessed: O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 7:24-25). What a miraculous transformation followed his conversion. Little did he realize that his letters written in prison to the churches would make up most of our New Testament which has inspired millions.

Just think! The man with a Legion of demons was delivered and was commissioned by Jesus: Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish . . . how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel (Mark 5:19-20).

Thought for Today:

Often when the worst sinners come to Christ and are saved, He uses their testimony the most.

Word Studies:

4:24 mete =ive to others; 5:19 suffered him not =ould not permit him.

Cross Reference:

For Mark 4:12: See Isaiah 6:9-10; Jeremiah 5:21; Ezekiel 12:2.

2 Corinthians 9

Christians should give generously as God has prospered them.

INSIGHT

God asks for your money, not for His sake, but for yours. What God wants is your heart, and one measure of how much of your heart He has is how willing you are to give your money back to Him. Two of God’s reasons for asking Christians to give to other Christians are to foster mutual unity and concern among believers, and to show the love of God to the unsaved. Remember, it is not the amount but the willingness that counts. Give as God has prospered you.

PRAYER

Praise the Lord for the many material possessions you enjoy:
We have thought, O God, on Your lovingkindness,
In the midst of Your temple.
According to Your name, O God,
So is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
Your right hand is full of righteousness.
Let Mount Zion rejoice,
Let the daughters of Judah be glad,
Because of Your judgments. (Psalm 48:9-11)

Pause for praise and thanksgiving.

Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin:
Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. (Mark 10:21-22)

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this affirmation to the Lord:
How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way. . .
Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy,
And teach me Your statutes.
I am Your servant;
Give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies.
(Psalm 119:103-104, 124-125)

As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:

  • Contentment with what you own
  • Health concerns of friends and family members
  • Whatever else is on your heart

Finally, offer this prayer to the Lord:
Your testimonies are wonderful;
Therefore my soul keeps them.
The entrance of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
(Psalm 119:129-130)

Psalm 122:1
I was gla d when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

Mike and Jerry were neighbors for about five months when one day Jerry asked Mike to play golf with him on a bright, beautiful Sunday morning. Mike graciously declined, asking for a raincheck. Jerry invited Mike on a couple more Sundays, but Mike always refused. Jerry asked him why, and Mike told him that he went to church. After that, Jerry didn’t ask again, on Sunday or any other day of the week. Mike finally asked Jerry why, and he replied, “I asked you to go with me three times to do something that was really important to me, but you never once asked me to go to church with you.”

Mike never thought that Jerry might like to go to church. Too often we shy away from asking people because we don’t want to seem pushy. But the Lord asks that we work diligently to bring people to Him. Often people do not go to church simply because they feel awkward and have never been asked. Share your faith. Ask someone to church with you. You never know what might happen.

Prayer:

Open my eyes to the needs of others. Help me to not think I know people’s minds before I ask. Be patient with me as I learn to share my faith with others. Amen

October 14

As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king - Judges 8:8

It was a magnificent tribute to the royal bearing of this illustrious family. All the children had the stamp of kingliness on them, which had impressed even these barbaric princes. Would that a similar confession could be extorted from those who behold the members of the royal house of Jesus!

The children of a king! It is within the reach of any who aspire to it. By the second birth we become the children of God, joint-heirs with Christ, and the Spirit witnesses to our sonship, teaching us to cry, Abba, Father. As children of the great King we should bear the sign of our high lineage in our bearing and walk.

Royalty of Demeanor. - There is an aristocratic bearing in the scions of noble houses among men. The head is lifted high, the mien is proud, the manner distant and reserved. But in the family of God, meekness and lowliness, humility and contriteness, are marks of family likeness. We walk as Jesus walked, of whom the Baptist said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

Royally of Dress. - The king is marked by the brilliant orders glittering on his breast. Purple and ermine become those who date their descent from a line of kings. But the emblem of our family is the cross; our color is scarlet; our insignia is the towel and basin that speak of lowly service.

Royalty of Occupation. - The earthly king does nothing servile. He is waited on with lowly obeisance. But they who are of the same family as Jesus are found performing the lowliest acts of service, in jails, hospitals, and slums. In this they follow closely on the steps of Him who went about doing good.
