Dear Readers

Healthy Hair

Try a scalp treatment. When we think healthy hair, most of us focus on how it looks when we style it.

But healthy hair starts before you style; it starts at your scalp. Treating your scalp right is essential to having all-around healthy locks. This week, head to a salon or trichologist for a scalp treatment to get your hair back on the road to health.

Scalp treatments are great for several reasons. “They get rid of the top layer of skin on your scalp, where bacteria and fungus grow; they make your scalp smell good; and they stimulate the area and ensure blood supply for growth,” says Brian Thompson, Director of Product Development for Philip Kingsley Trichological Centres.

Thompson notes that a trained trichologist or salon technician should look closely at your scalp, then tailor the ingredients in the treatment to your particular concerns. Three common ingredients include sulfur, to cleanse and combat bacteria that naturally proliferate on the scalp; salicylic acid, to help slough off dead scalp cells; and menthol, a mild stimulant to get blood under the surface of your scalp flowing to your hair follicles. In-salon treatments usually take only half an hour.
